EuroShop puts the store on the podium

EuroShop 2020, the big European retail trade show held every three years in Dusseldorf, has just seen five days of exhibitions and conferences in February, with a primary focus on how to transform the customer’s shopping experience in stores.

Over 2,300 exhibitors, including Cegid, presented their latest innovations and 94,000 visitors perused the 16 exhibition halls dedicated to technology and other retail accessories including refrigerated furniture and shop-window mannequins.

This international trade show shines a big spotlight on the point-of-sale and shows just how much the role of the store is changing. “Retail is not dead” shines bright on one stand dedicated to promotional displays. No, the store certainly isn’t dead; and there’s a lot more that can be done to harness the success of e-commerce.

“Retailers now realise that they have to give customers good reasons to enter their stores that go far beyond their product offer. Specialty retail is now focusing on higher levels of quality and investing in turning the shopping experience into a more joined-up and digital journey, connecting online and offline channels and adding more services, while simplifying processes, logistics and much more”

Michael Gerling

Chairman of the EuroShop Advisory Board and CEO of the EHI Retail Institute Cologne

Payment becomes frictionless

The halls dedicated to retail technology, hardware, PoS terminals and tills equipped with RFID readers also housed many innovative solutions for mobile and frictionless payments.

Increasing numbers of people are opting to pay with mobile devices, with around a quarter of point-of-sale payments expected to be mobile within five years, according to a “Mobile in Retail 2019” study by GS1 Germany.

At EuroShop, many of the major payment providers, like Adyen, as well as bank-owned providers, were all well-represented and showing off their latest innovations for the next generation of NFC-enabled terminals and solutions to accept mobile payments made on smartphones.

All ready for a seamless shopping experience

At the Cegid stand, visitors were able to see a number of omnichannel services – including click-and-collect, endless aisle and ship-from-store – for a unified shopping experience and various new tools and mobile devices for arming sales staff.

The challenges around security, the fight against theft and ease of disabling anti-theft devices at the checkout were among some of the many questions posed by companies.

EuroShop was the ideal venue to provide answers by highlighting the many suppliers of RFID-based solutions and connected, digital smart labels – that not only display the price and any special offers, but provide automated security options as well.

So, it’s all you need to build the store of tomorrow and offer your customers a seamless shopping experience.

The next EuroShop trade event will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany, from the 26th of February to the 2nd of March 2023.
